Frequently Asked Questions

Dolphin Ring Cutter FAQs

  • Yes, the Dolphin can cut through any ring metal including the difficult ones such as tungsten, and titanium.

Please note: There may be rare exceptions of metals that the device cannot cut.

  • In contrast to currently used power tools, the Dolphin uses a slow rotational cutting disc speed, combined with an automatic guard that applies optimal force, for the fastest cut possible within a safe temperature range.

  • -Cuts all ring metals

    -Cuts automatically and more efficiently

    -Saves you time

-Saves you effort. No manually spinning the blade and applying pressure

  • The Dolphin Ring Cutter is a medical device that is listed with the FDA. Ring Rescue Inc. also maintains a Medical Device Establishment License with Health Canada to sell their medical devices in Canada.

  • The disc rotates 100 times slower than a rotary tool, which helps keep cutting temperature low.

This is beneficial for a variety of reasons:

-Helps reduce risk of thermal burn

-Helps minimize airborne particles which can be harmful to your lungs

  • The Dolphin Ring Cutter can cut rings up to 20mm (2cm) wide and 6mm (0.6cm) thick. For wide bands, you will complete two cuts, the second cut directly across from the first cut.

Please note: Rings come in a large variety of shapes and sizes. We cannot guarantee that every ring can be cut by this device.

  • Yes. AssureCUT™ Discs are single patient use. This is important for the infection control, as well as the safety and effectiveness of the device. Failing to do so will result in more friction during the cut, and therefore a risk of thermal burn to the patient. Using a dull disc will also decrease the speed of the cut.

Warning: Failing to use a new disc for each cut can result in thermal burns.

  • Ring Rescue Lubricant is an essential step in the ring cutting process and no other lubricant may be used as it can cause damage to the Dolphin.

Ring Lubricant aids in keeping the cutting temperature low and increases the efficiency of the cutting process. Ring Lubricant must be applied to the disc during the ring cutting process. The progress indicator, warning light and the work light beside the spinning disc will flash blue as a reminder to apply it to the spinning blade.

Warning: Failing to apply Ring Rescue Lubricant during the cutting process can result in thermal burns.

  • No. The Ring Lubricant included in your Kit was specially designed and is a necessary step to ensure the ring cutter performs optimally. Using other lubricant solutions or water can cause risk of burns, significantly impact the speed of the cut and cause damage to the device.

Warning: Failing to apply Ring Lubricant during the cutting process can result in safety concerns and risk of device damage.

  • There are many reasons, but here are a few key ones…

    1. Safety - This device was built with patients in mind. The guard is designed to protect the finger from the spinning blade, while the internal software of the devices measures the drag of the cut to significantly reduce the risk of burn.

    2. Cuts any metal - unlike other options, the Dolphin can easily and efficiently cut through any ring metal, including tungsten and titanium

    3. Easy to use - The Dolphin is designed for easy, single person operation. Gone are the days of multiple people needed to help with ring cutting!

    4. Efficiency - The Dolphin™ is designed for optimal cutting speed. The internal software uses a feedback loop to cut as fast as possible while keeping the temperature of the cut low

    5. Purpose built device - We offer the only medical device that is built for ring cutting, which is a medical procedure. Our device conforms with the Medical Electrical Equipment Standard and is built with medical grade components.

  • The Compression Device is designed to help you preserve sentimental rings by removing them without cutting. Often rings represent significant memories and individuals don’t want to see them damaged. This is also the case with rings of significant monetary value. Plus, if you don’t have to cut the ring you also save the cost of an AssureCUT™ Disc.

The Compression Device can also come in handy in cases of ring cutting when you’re faced with a very swollen finger. The Compression Device can shrink the finger around the ring, making inserting the finger guard under the ring easier for you and more comfortable for the patient.

Compression Device FAQs

  • Yes! The Ring Rescue Compression Device is safe, user-friendly and comfortable for the patient. The device simply applies uniform, measurable, and targeted air pressure to comfortably compress the finger. It always makes the finger smaller and this effect lasts for several minutes, after which the finger will begin to return to it’s prior size.

  • The Compression Device is a patent-protected medical device that is listed with the FDA and our facility has a Medical Device Establishment License, all of which is required for hospital use.

  • No, the Compression Device is not designed to directly interact with the ring. It applies targeted pressure to make the finger smaller which allows a ring that was stuck to now have enough room to be removed. You first apply the device to reduce finger size and then once the device is removed lubricant is applied to the finger and proper manipulation techniques are used to remove the ring non-destructively.

  • Yes! For all ring removals, we recommend you move the ring towards the base of the finger, so that the largest part of the finger is free for application of the device. The bladder of our device was specially designed to have 3 compression points, which means that there are seams in the bladder. When dealing with large rings or stones, you can align those seams with the uniquely shaped ring to optimize compression.

On exceptionally rare occasions, you may encounter a ring that is so large and bulky that the device cannot be used, however, there is almost always enough room on a finger to move a ring away from the knuckle enough to effectively use the device.

  • The Compression Device is a patient-centric approach to ring removal. It is a great option that can be used to avoid the emotional and financial burden of cutting sentimental and valuable rings.

However, if you would like to continue using the ring cutting technique the Compression Device should still be used to shrink finger size and allow the guard of the ring cutter to be placed in more comfortably.

  • Yes, our device shrinks the size of the finger 100% of the time. But, it is then up to you to remove the ring. Our Training Video will walk you through case-specific techniques to guide you towards a successful ring removal. Our Expert Advice videos are a great resource for understanding the best techniques for success.

  • Yes and no. Although it doesn’t matter how long a ring has been stuck, the amount of time it has been stuck will impact the techniques used to remove the ring.

If the patient/customer has been unable to remove the ring for 2 weeks or less, it is likely fluid that is blocking the ring from being removed. In this situation, the Compression Device should be applied for 5 minutes (1 round). The Training Video outlines the corkscrew, rocker, claw and counter-traction techniques which should be used to attempt removal.

If the ring has been stuck for more than 2 weeks, it is likely tissue that is blocking the ring from being removed. In this case, 2-3 rounds of compression should be used. This is because fluid is more responsive to compression than tissue is, therefore these cases will need more time to compress down to a more manageable size.

  • The Ring Rescue Compression Device will always compress the soft tissues surrounding a knuckle bone, and will always reduce finger size. The extent of size reduction really depends on the amount of reversible swelling present (fluid vs. tissue). The bone size cannot be changed, and some arthritic fingers do present an impossible scenario for non-destructive ring removal. The Dolphin Ring Cutter can help you in these instances!

  • Our Compression Device does work in cases of weight gain, as the device will always compress a finger and make it smaller. However, the degree of finger size reduction when fatty tissue is present, will be less compared to cases of recent swelling. Success rates of professionals removing the stuck ring are often lower in cases of excessive weight gain. Ring removal ultimately still depends on ring size, finger size, amount of reversible swelling, and most importantly the proficiency with ring removal techniques.

  • The finger turns purple do to decrease blood flow to the tip of the finger. This is expected and safe. Any discolouration of the finger will return to normal shortly after the device is removed.

  • The Compression Device is included in the Ring Rescue Kit which has all the tools you will need for stuck ring removal. To order, please visit ringrescue.com/order-now.
